One of the greatest challenges in personal finance — especially for clergy — is not math, budgeting apps, or investment strategies. It is honesty.
Honesty about where things really stand.
Honesty about debt.
Honesty about stress.
Honesty about the fear that maybe it’s “too late” to change direction.
At the Florida United Methodist Foundation, one of the deepest passions of our work is helping create a space where clergy can have these conversations without shame, embarrassment, or fear of judgment. Financial readiness is not about perfection. It is about courage.
Ironically, many pastors preach bold faith every week while quietly feeling hesitant to face their own financial reality. Yet faith and finances are not separate conversations. Stewardship has always been spiritual work. Taking an honest look at your financial health is not failure — it is an act of faithfulness.
The truth is that financial change often begins with uncomfortable steps:
- Opening the statements you’ve been avoiding
- Asking for help
- Creating a plan
- Saying “no” to habits that are hurting long-term health
- Trusting that small, consistent decisions can change the future
Those moments can feel awkward and vulnerable. But they are also where freedom begins.
We want clergy to feel empowered to be just as bold with their finances as they are with their faith. To believe that healthy financial stewardship is not selfish — it strengthens families, reduces anxiety, and creates greater freedom for ministry and leadership.
Financial health rarely changes overnight. But trajectories can change. Hope can return. Confidence can grow.
And sometimes the most faithful step is simply deciding that you are ready to stop avoiding the conversation and start moving forward. The Florida United Methodist Foundation remains available as a resource and partner in that journey. More importantly, we strive to be a safe, trusted, and judgment-free place where clergy can honestly assess where they are financially, reflect on where they want to go, and begin building a healthier path forward with confidence, encouragement, and hope.
