The Florida United Methodist Foundation is honored to support a meaningful project that aligns with our shared commitment to social justice. The Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church has a long-standing dedication to confronting racism, and the Bishop’s Task Force on Anti-Racism was created to more clearly and intentionally respond to these issues across our state and nation. As part of this effort, understanding our history is critical. The books Devil in the Grove and Beneath a Ruthless Sun, both by Gilbert King, offer important insights into the past, helping us to better navigate the present.
Devil in the Grove, won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, was nominated for a 2013 Edgar Award, and was named Book of the Year (Non-fiction, 2012) by The Boston Globe and Christian Science Monitor. These accolades highlight the book’s importance in exposing the deep injustices of racial history.
We are privileged to be involved in a project that brings these stories to a wider audience. Partnering with Indie Atlantic Studios, the Florida Conference aims to produce a documentary that highlights the injustices of the past and fosters important conversations around equality. Film has the power to inspire reflection and spark dialogue, and this project will contribute to the ongoing fight for justice.
To help make this vision a reality, the FLUMC established the Doggett Moore Fund, which will provide a grant for the production of the documentary. By contributing to this fund, you can play a vital role in sharing these stories and promoting understanding in our communities.
